Stagger the joints between sheets of backer board so they don't fall in a straight line over joints in your sub flooring, in addition to stagger corners to avoid getting four pieces come together in a single place. Fasten backer board with special backer board screws, making sure the screw heads are below the surface.

1. Lay down the sheet that needs to be cut. Cut the panel with a cement backer board knife, guiding the blade the length of a drywall square.

2. Turn the sheet the other way up and holding it down on one side of the scored line, snap the other side upward. Pick the sheet up on its side, score the back of the cut, than snap the backer board to free the cut piece.

3. Sweep the floor free of rubbish. Place the sheet down and drive screws through the sheet into the joists each 6 inches.

4. Lay fiberglass mesh tape over the joints, than apply a thin layer of thin set over your tape. As the thin set has hardened, you are ready to lay tile on your new floor.
