        Outdoor lighting

Installing low voltage lighting.

Here is a way to provide pleasant illumination to outdoor areas for a small amount of money. You can purchase most of the components in a kit. Some kits come with a timer or a photovoltaic sensor to turn lights on at night and off during the day. Installing low voltage lighting is a good do-it-yourself project.

Dimmer switch installation

Instead of turning a light fully on or fully off, dimmer switches allow you to turn it on in gradations. Turning down a dimmer switch decreases the electricity delivered to a fixture, helping you save energy. And because dimmers turn a bulb on gradually, they extend bulb life. If a single switch controls the fixture, purchase a single pole dimmer switch. But be aware that this type of dimmer is not suitable for all fixtures. Dimmable fluorescent lights require special dimmers, and ceiling fans need fan rated dimmers. If you have a 3- way dimmer switch set up (with a light controlled by two switches that do not have on and off printed on their toggles), only one of the switches can be a dimmer switch.

1. Shut off power to the circuit. Remove the switch mounting screws, and pull the switch out of the wall. Snip the wires as close to the switch as possible.

2. Straighten the ends of the black wires and strip about 1 inch of insulation from the end of each wire. Splice the switch leads to the house wires then install wire nuts. Fold the wires back into the box, and then fasten the switch to the box with its two mounting screws. Restore power to the circuit.

Test your new dimmer switch.
