 Repairing or installing doorbells.

A door bell system incorporates a doorbell transformer which reduces 120-volt line current to between 6 and 30 volts. Light gauge bell wire connects the low voltage side of the doorbell transformer to the bell, chime, or buzzer and a doorbell buttons in a circuit. Pressing the button, which is a spring loaded switch, closes the circuit and activates the bell, chime, or buzzer. If your bell does not work, find the cause by using the process of elimination described in the steps below. A voltmeter or multitasked will make the job easier , but you also can do most tests with a short piece of bell wire or a screwdriver. Unless you are working on the transformer, there no need to shut off the power while inspecting a doorbell. The current from the transformer is not hazardous.

Check wires to the doorbell buttons.

1. To check a doorbell system remove the bottom, turn it over and examine the connections. To make sure that the wires cannot accidentally slip back through the hole, attach a spring clip. Scrape away any corrosion on the terminals. Tighten the connections to the terminals, wrap any faulty insulation with electrical tape.

Test the doorbell buttons by jumping or using a continuity tester.

2. Test a button by jumping its terminals with a short piece of bell wire. If the bell sounds, the button is bad and should be replace. You can also test the button by disconnecting the wires and touching both terminals with a continuity tester. If the tester glows when the button is pressed, the button is working. If the bell still doesn’t sound, disconnect the button, twist its wires together and test further.

Check wires to the doorbell transformer.

3. Find your transformer. It may be near your homes service panel or Attached to a junction box in the vicinity of the door or the bell. To check the transformer, disconnect both wires and touch each terminal with the probes of a voltmeter. Set the dial at 50 ACV. If the meter shows no current at all, the transformer is the culprit and should be replaced.

Replacing the doorbell chimes units Label wires and remove the doorbell chimes.

1. You can shut off power to the circuit, but its not necessary because the voltage is so low. The terminals are labeled, so mart the wires accordingly as you disconnect them. Unscrew the chime from the wall and remove it.

Install new doorbell chimes.

2. Install the new doorbell chimes to the wall with mounting screws. Connect the low-voltage wires to the terminals, and attach the cover.

3. Now the easy way to install new doorbell chimes.
