        Outdoor lighting

Installing low voltage lighting.

Here is a way to provide pleasant illumination to outdoor areas for a small amount of money. You can purchase most of the components in a kit. Some kits come with a timer or a photovoltaic sensor to turn lights on at night and off during the day. Installing low voltage lighting is a good do-it-yourself project.

Planning for lighting fixtures

Many do-it- yourselfers who wouldn't think twice about building a bunk bed or framing a wall will shrink at the prospect of electrical work. Frantic questions spring to mind; How do i know the power is really off when i am working on it? If i make a mistake, will i burn the house down or injure someone? So they call in a professional electrician for even the simplest repairs, things they could do themselves.

Make no mistake, electricity deserves respect. But if you are equipped with a basic understanding of how electricity works, and you follow instructions that emphasize safety, you can successfully complete most home electrical projects.

Safety is indeed the most important consideration when approaching a wiring job. In most cases a flip of a circuit breaker and a quick test of the wires for power, a 10 minute job at most will ensure that you can't receive an electrical shock as you work.

Improving lighting is a common reason for making changes to a home's electrical system. In older houses, electrical remodeling often focuses on both improving lighting and providing added electrical circuits and electrical capacity. Many light fixtures draw attention to themselves because they look good. Others such as recessed lights and most modest flush mounted lighting fixtures recede visually. Usually a room should only one or two flashy lighting fixtures, otherwise it will start to look like a showroom.

Plan lighting with your household activities in mind. Start with general illumination also called ambient lighting that will give the whole room sufficient light. Then add task lighting, directed at a work surface or a table. May lights several feet below the ceiling for instance a pendent light or a floor lamp highlight a certain spot while enhancing general lighting.

To make sure you get all the light you want check your lighting fixture bulb wattage rating before you purchase it. Some lighting fixtures take low voltage bulbs that may not provide the light you're looking for.
