Installing house wrap.

Air infiltration typically causes more than 20 percent of a house’s heat loss. To protect against this,

many builders now apply house wrap before installing siding. This spun bonded or woven polymer

material keeps water and drafts out yet breathes so it does not trap moisture in the walls. It comes in

8 foot wide rolls and is easy and quick to install. On a still day when you have a helper, start at one

corner of the house and, holding the roll vertically, unroll about 6 feet of the material. Let it overlap

the corner by about 12 inches, and fasten it in place with cap nails that have a plastic or metal

washer type head. Keep the material plumb and the bottom edge aligned with the foundation line.

Secure the material every 12 to 18 inches along the studs. Most types of house wrap have stud lines

marked on the fabric, align the first sheet, and the others should automatically fall on subsequent

studs. Lap the wrap by about 2 inches between sheets, and seal seams with special house wrap tape.

Finally, cut out the window and door openings.
