        Outdoor lighting

Installing low voltage lighting.

Here is a way to provide pleasant illumination to outdoor areas for a small amount of money. You can purchase most of the components in a kit. Some kits come with a timer or a photovoltaic sensor to turn lights on at night and off during the day. Installing low voltage lighting is a good do-it-yourself project.

 Installing GFI Receptacle

Attach a GFI receptacle, below, connecting multiple wires with pigtails. Incoming power goes to the

LINE terminals. LOAD lines carry power from the GFCI to other receptacles on the circuit. So if you

install a GFI as the first receptacle of a circuit, the entire circuit will be protected. If you are

installing a GFI at the end of a line, no wires will connect to the load side only to the line side.

Installing a GFI circuit breaker.

1. You can clip a GFI breaker into a service panel as you would an ordinary breaker, but you must

wire it differently. Shut off the main breaker and be careful not to touch the hot wires coming into

the box. Select the circuit you wish to protect, unclip the old breaker from the hot bus bar, and slip it

out of the service panel. Disconnect the hot wire from the old breaker and the neutral wire from the

bus bar. Attach both wires to the setscrew terminals of the new GFI breaker.

2. Loosen a terminal on the neutral bus bar, and connect the white wire from the GFI to the neutral

bus bar than tightening the screw. Clipping the GFCI breaker into place attaches it to the hot bus

bar. Turn the power back on, set the breaker, and push the test button. The breaker should trip.

 Learning about the GFI outlet

The ground fault circuit interrupter GFCI outlet protects against electric shock. Whenever the

amounts of incoming and outgoing current are unequal, indicating that there is current leakage, the

GFCI opens the circuit instantly, cutting off the power. GFI are build to trip in 1/40th of a second in

the event of a ground fault of 0.005 ampere. There are two types of GFCI. The GFI circuit breaker is

installed in the service panel, it monitors the amount of current going to and coming from an entire

circuit. A GFI outlet monitors the flow of electricity to that receptacle, as well as to all devices

installed in the circuit from that point onward (referred to as downstream). The electrical code

requires that receptacles in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor locations ( in other words any

potentially damp location where the risk of shock is greatest) be protected by a GFI. You can use

either type to serve these areas.
