Repairing burst water pipes

 

If a water pipe freezes then breaks, your first priority may be getting it running again, whatever it requires. There are a number of temporary products on the market for repairing, some using clamps and sleeves, others epoxy putties. These repairs could possibly get you thru a weekend okay. We are going to show you how to use full slip repair coupling, a extra permanent fix. What repair approach you take, be familiar with the diameters of your pipe and the material of your pipe. Water supply copper pipes can burst for several reasons, but the number one reason is water freezing and expanding inside your pipe, Turn off your water, then apply the fix.

 

 

 

 

 

 Repairing copper pipe

 

1. Dry off the damaged area of the copper pipe and file down any sharp edges with a file. Install the rubber sleeve that comes with the repair clamp around the damage area. The repair should be on the other side of your pipe from where the damage is.

 

 

 

 

 

2. Place the two haves of the repair clamp that the rubber sleeve is sand witched between the repair clamps.

 

 

 

 

 

3. Insert bolts through the holes within the repair clamp then thread nuts onto the ends. Tighten the bolts until your clamp seals the damage spot. Note; This is a temporary repair only. Repair your damaged copper pipe as soon as you can.

 

 

How to install a repair coupling

 

1. For a extended lasting not permanent use a compression-fit, full slip repair coupling. Mark the location of the copper pipe section to be repaired.

 

 

2. Cut the broken copper pipe with a tubing cutter. Turn the cutter around the copper pipe. Tighten the cutter slightly with every turn until the pipe snaps.

 

 

3. De-burr the inside of the copper pipes while using the triangular blade on the tubing cutter.

 

 

4. Slip the compression nuts then rings supplied with the repair coupling on the cut ends of your pipe being repaired. Tighten each compression nut with adjustable wrench.
