        Outdoor lighting

Installing low voltage lighting.

Here is a way to provide pleasant illumination to outdoor areas for a small amount of money. You can purchase most of the components in a kit. Some kits come with a timer or a photovoltaic sensor to turn lights on at night and off during the day. Installing low voltage lighting is a good do-it-yourself project.

Installing OSB roof sheathing.

Roof sheathing comes after all the rafters are in place. Sheathing stabilizes the roof and provides a

nailing surface for the roofing material. Roof sheathing can be ½-inch 16 inches on center rafters or

24 inch on center rafters. Plywood is the choice sheathing material, but you can use ½-inch OSB.

Prolong exposure to the weather can damage the framing, so water proof the structure as soon as

possible. Use caution, the greater the roof slope, the more hazardous the job. On steep roof, nail

down 2+4 cleats for footing support as you work up the roof.

1.Plan any panel cutting on one side so you can use the cut off portions on the opposite side. You

can start at the eaves with a full 4 foot wide panel, provided you don’t end up at the top having to use

a strip less than 16 inches wide. A narrow strip may be too weak to support a person or provide a

solid backing for the roofing. Trim the panels of the first row to adjust the width of the last row.

Stagger the panels in succeeding rows so the ends fall on different framing members.

2. Begin panel installation at a bottom corner of the roof, placing the long side perpendicular to the

rafters and positioning the end joint over the center of a rafter. Use H panel clips on panels installed

on 24 inch on center rafters. Make the panel edges flush with rafter ends and the edge of fascia

rafters. Leave a 1/8-inch space between panels for expansion. Fasten each panel using 8d common,

spiral threaded, or ring shank nails. Space nails 6 inches apart along panel ends and 12 inches at

intermediate supports. If you use a powered staple gun, use 1 ½-inch staples for ½-inch plywood.

Drive the staples 4 inches apart along the edges and 8 inches in the interior of the sheathing. Start the

second course with a half 4+4 foot panel. Stagger the panels by at least one rafter as you go up the

roof.
