       Installing a water heater

 Water heaters

Water heaters, which offer a home its hot water, can account for between 20 percent and 25 percent of a home's entire monthly power demand. It pays to purchase the most effective water heater that responds to your needs. You will find four basic water heating methods, storage space the most common, combination space also water heating system, instantaneous and tank less water system.

Water heater storage space

water heaters, which heat in addition to store water variety in size from 20 to 80 gallons and use natural gas, electricity, propane, or fuel oil as heat options. Combinations space and water heating system heat together the home and your water and are good options for small, highly insulated homes. Demand systems, either gas or electric powered, make available a limited quantity of hot water immediately and with no storage space capacity. Tank less coil types use a heat exchanger built-in with a space heating boiler to heat water instantaneously. Tank less coil combine efficiently using a storage tank to reduce its boiler cycling.

Most owners prefer storage water heaters for that bounty of heated water they could make available Then again you should not buy determined by capacity alone. The best criterion is the very first hour rating number; the amount of hot water the heater can provide per hour if the tank is filled with hot water. To determine what year need is, determine the quantity of water used in the household at the height usage hour. An additional important measure may be the energy factor, that indicates the general in it efficiency based on the quantity of hot water generate per unit of fuel on a normal day.

For many owners, installing an new water heater is easier than they imagine, especially if the new unit is similar to your old one. If you want to switch from electric hot water heater to gas water heater or else vice versa, on the other hand, discuss the assorted installation options with your regional do-it-self-center. A 30-50- gallon model can service most households. Compare the recuperation rates on the models you take a look at, Quicker recuperation rates mean faster heating, Gas water heaters have quicker rates than electric water heaters and in most areas, are far less expensive to operate. Prior to starting to remove or work on an existing water heater, turn off the water and gas or power supply. If you do not have a floor drain underneath the water heater valve, attach a hose to the drain valve that is near the base of the tank and run it to a close-by drain or outdoors. Now you can open the valve, and drain the water from the tank. In case your home is in an earthquake zone, you will need to install straps across the new water heater. And see if the new water heater is a new height than the previous one, use flexible pipe connectors for your water inlet and outlet, they will bend as necessary to make the hookup. If your pipes at the top are not threaded, remove them and use threaded nipples, secure the nipples with an adjustable wrench. Now it is time to install a new temperature and pressure relief valve on your new hot water heater, and test it by squeezing the lever at the top of the water heater.

Installing a water heater

1. Before you start your task turn the main water off going to your house. Next we will drain the water heater by connecting a water hose to the water heater valve at the bottom of your tank and drain all the water to the outside. Next we will need wrenches to remove the inlet and outlet valve ¾ inch fitting on top of the water heater. If your water heater is electric go ahead and disconnect the main power going to your water heater, now you can disconnect the wires at the water tank which is on top. If your water heater is gas go ahead and shut off the gas valve and remove your inlet and outlet ¾ fitting on top. You will also need to remove your vent pipe on top of your water heater.

2. Grab a helper and move the old water heater out of your way and slide the new water heater in its place making sure the controls and burner are facing to the front. Now you are ready to re- connect your water heater it is the same way but reveres. On a electric water heater do not turn power on till you have fill the water tank if you don’t you will burn out the elements so make sure it is full with water.

3. Wrap the threads of the fitting with pipe tape, fittings with pipe tape, and screw the fittings into the water heater (blue for cold water inlet, and for the hot water outlet). Ensure the arrows marked for the fittings point in the direction of the water flow.

 4. Install new flexible connectors at the water inlet and also at the water outlet pipes. If there is no shutoff valve on your cold water side, you should install one before installing the water heater. After all your connections are made, open your shutoff valve and fill the water tank. While it is filling, open several hot water faucets in the house to bleed off air in all of your pipes.

 5. Assemble the gas pipes. Spread pipe dope on the threads, and all the fitting, and then tightening them with one pipe wrench on the pipe and another to the fitting. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for connecting the unit with gas supply tubing. After turning on the gas, test every connections by brushing soapy water on your fitting and looking to see if you have bubbles. Great water heater installation job.
